I really love storytelling across a variety of mediums. I enjoy learning about other people and how and why they’ve chosen to pursue the path that they have.
Since I’m immersed in the maker entrepreneur community and photography is a passion too, oftentimes I find myself with a camera documenting these local makers whose businesses have grown up alongside my own.
Sonya, of Metamorphosis Metals, a jewelry artist here in Raleigh, North Carolina is one of those artisans whose been in business and making her wares almost as long as I have. A few years ago I took these photos of Sonya in her studio.
Sonya has a keen eye for curating these amazing vignettes in her space. Like me, she is very visually driven and likes to surround herself with imagery and an environment that inspires her to create.
Sonya’s jewelry work is both dainty and raw. She is quite skilled and has a degree in metal jewelry making and design from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.
Though these images were taken a couple of years ago, I think you can still get a good sense of her aesthetic.
It’s fascinating to watch her work evolve, and currently she is making pieces that are unique, beautiful and whimsical but still retain a level of edginess.
Sonya will be selling her wares in my upcoming Rock & Shop Market on Saturday November 30th from 11am-5pm at the Durham Armory. Soon too, you’ll be able to purchase some of her wares at my shop Gather in downtown Cary. For now, you can see more of her work and purchase her jewelry at her etsy shop here.
