Dear Michelle, my daughter-in-law, Joanna, sent me your Design Sponge article. Congrats! I recently went through six episodes of severe sun reactions and was wondering how you got diagnosed and what the immune system disease is. My intuition tells me what’s going on with me is stress related, but doesn’t seem to be on the regular medical menu here. Good tips you suggested, now to DO them…Good luck balancing life! Joanna’s a young designer like you–I love how your generation is global AND local. You’re inspiring. Thanks for any info you can share. Love, Jacki Wms., San Luis Obispo, CA.

Hi Jacki, The condition I have is called solar urticaria. It came on last year out of blue. I had been walking about a mile every morning but one day after a walk, the area where I hadn’t applied sunscreen broke out in hives immediately upon coming inside. I was alarmed as I’ve never been allergic to anything and nothing runs in the family. After a number of times with this occurring and testing out my symptoms in various scenarios I started to suspect that I had solar urticaria because of the exact match of symptoms, but it is so rare that it seemed very unlikely. I then went to my general doctor who suspected the same, but knew nothing about it. Then on to a dermatologist and an allergist who both confirmed it with tests. You should definitely get blood work because Lupus mimicks the symptoms, as do a few other much more common things like PMLE as well. Hope that helps, please email me personally michelle at michelle-s dot com if you want to talk about it further.
