My food philosophy is to eat mostly veggies and those that are in season, and for me, Fall is my favorite food season of all. I love the spices in combination with pumpkins and squash: ginger, cinnamon, cloves. Last night while drinking mulled cider and making this dish with friends, one of them asked for seasonal cold weather recipe suggestions.
Below is a quick list of delicious-sounding meals that I found online, all of them using something or a few things that are in season here in North Carolina now: cabbage, apples, kale, sweet potatoes, pecans. While this is not a comprehensive list (the possibilities are endless!), this will give you an idea of the types of ingredients to use in your cooking that are readily available this month at your local Farmer’s Market.
Where the Wild Things Are was visually stunning and emotionally rich. The cinematography and the writing captured the sheer rawness of adolescence: the tumult, the freedom and the confusion of deeply felt emotions. A fan of the screenwriter Dave Eggers since reading his similarly moving book, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, I continue to be blown away by his talent. His words are true to the core, they make me want to write, to photograph, to continue to create art in a way that is genuine.
That I saw this movie as a mother and a few weeks until my 30th birthday seems fitting. That I am squarely between my own bewildering adolescence, a time when I took everything to heart but felt incomplete, and my fulfilling but less perceptive adulthood made the movie that much more poignant. Knowing that my own daughter will one day have to navigate those same complicated adolescent waters was an overwhelming reminder of life cycles.
Above all, the movie was a strange and beautiful tribute to the unbridled wisdom of youth and an inspiration.
These days I’ve been feeling the need to get back to my creative roots. To make more time for creative play, exploration, illustration and collage, things that I haven’t had time for in a while. I am so looking forward to it, it feels like coming back home.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to be a part of a spontaneous fashion shoot for the Rock & Shop Vintage Market with the photography provided by my talented friends Aaron & Rosie. They are amazing photographers and post-production artists and I can’t wait to see the pictures they’ve produced. Thanks so much you guys! Below are some behind-the-scenes recaps that I was able to capture amongst the stylish chaos. You can see more of my pictures of the day at my flickr page.
Rosie took head shots of the models while Aaron took fashion photos.
I was somehow able to convince my new friends Ellie & Brendan to join us and I am so glad they came. Ellie looked stunning in the outfits she modeled (including the Revamp dress & jewelry from Good Girls Studio above) and Brendan provided comic relief and much needed delivery runs. Both of them (and my Rock & Shop Market collaborator Regan) helped to ground me in an otherwise whirlwind day. You can see more behind-the-scenes images documenting the shoot on their blogs, mint & okay great.
The shoot would not have functioned if our very own Miss J wasn’t there. Not only did Jasmine find and manage the models, she convinced the Paul Mitchell Hair Academy’s fleet of students in training to come eleventh hour and function as our hair and makeup team.
It’s going to take me the weekend to recover from the past two days and get ready for next weekend when we debut our first ever Rock & Shop Vintage Market. What a fun experience! Hope to see you next Saturday at the Cotton Room at Golden Belt in Durham (on the third floor in Building 2) from 1-5pm for the event. All these designs will be on the catwalk at our fashion show and for sale during the event, plus we have over 50 designers selling repurposed fashions and vintage goods!
