I’m a nominee for the Martha Stewart / American Maker contest that the publication is currently hosting. My business is eligible to win $10,000 to apply towards it – wow, what a long way that would go to pay down the expenses I’ve put into building Gather. In order to be considered my profile needs to receive enough votes to get it into the top tier. I hope you’ll consider casting your vote today through Sept. 22 (you can vote up to 6x day).
Here’s a little bit more about why I think my business is a good fit:
In 2004 I began selling wares featuring my designs to local boutiques and created an online shop to highlight other young makers like myself. At the time, sites like ETSY didn’t exist and there weren’t many channels to showcase these types of goods. That same year, I also organized a silent auction for a local college radio station that combined live bands and handmade wares from the artisans in my online shop. That event segued into The Rock & Shop Market, which has evolved into an event that features over 100 juried, artisan entrepreneurs alongside food trucks and live bands. Next year will be the 10th anniversary and I’m proud to say it was the first event of its kind in North Carolina. Passionate about promoting these makers and the revitalization of my local downtown and community, I have created pop-up shops, merchandised unused store fronts, and otherwise created opportunities to spotlight them. Recently I’ve opened Gather, a coworking/shop space for artisan entrepreneurs.
