A few blocks away from Gather is a charming, well maintained and very well stocked herb garden, that you really wouldn’t happen upon unless you knew it was there. It is tucked away behind the railroad tracks, near, but sort of behind the town offices and next to an old historic building that used to be a hotel.
The hotel was built in 1868 by the town’s founder and is now a town museum.
The hotel was rebuilt in 1990 but the original smokehouse below is still in tact. The garden is maintained by a small group of ladies who alternate weeks and keep the plants well groomed and thriving. It really is a beautiful herb garden and a must see if, like me, culinary plants are your passion.
In the summer the space hosts a handful of outdoor concerts and in the fall classes on herb tending, plus an annual plant sale.
And growing alongside the perimeter two huge bay leaf and fig trees dot the grounds.
You can read more about the space and their extensive herb plantings here. The garden is located at 119 Ambassador Loop on the Cary Town Hall campus.
