DIY Tutorial / Holiday Styling – Christmas Mantle

Somehow I was always decorating or redecorating the mantle at my parent’s house growing up. I’m not sure why, because to this day at each holiday, my Mom creates beautiful season appropriate vignettes effortlessly. Why I thought I needed to step in and add this and move that, who knows. Especially when now, with a preschooler in the house, a hectic business swirling around me and a husband working on his Master’s Degree, we are a little lacking on time, let alone those extra holiday touches. I’m okay with that though. For us, simpler is better.

You won’t see much more than stockings and greenery on our mantle this year. But, if you are feeling more crafty, here is a a very simple holiday mantle I created for the Better Homes & Gardens magazine Christmas Ideas that can be whipped up quickly:

Christmas Mantle Decorating Idea

For the green chalkboard “ornaments” you’ll need:

  • 5-6 embroidery hoops
  • canvas (on a roll)
  • green chalkboard paint
  • ribbon
  • chalk

I traced circles onto the canvas using the embroidery hoops as a template. Then I painted the green chalkboard paint on each, let it dry then cut them into the circles, leaving approx. .5″ around the perimeter of each. I then put my cut green circles into the embroidery hoops and hung them with pretty ribbon.  Because the canvas in the hoops is chalkboard you can write and rewrite whatever you want on them. Finally, I filled in the space between those with glass ornaments that I filled with recycled newspaper shred.
