Last week I worked with photographer Cade Bowman to style the engagement photos of Laura & Mike, both of Raleigh, North Carolina but with ties to Virginia. Laura studied Veterinary Science at UVA in Charlottesville.
We first shot among the grape arbors at Barboursville Vineyard, a historical landmark that Thomas Jefferson had envisioned but failed at bringing to fruition successfully before his death. In the 1970’s it was reinstated as a vineyard by an Italian family. Today, alongside the winery and restaurant are fields with horses grazing, barns, an inn, and the decayed ruins of a home designed by Thomas Jefferson. The home was destroyed accidentally in a fire on Christmas Day in 1884 and makes for a striking photo backdrop.
We were lucky to meet the owner of the Vespa above, an Italian man who moved here about 10 years ago from Bergamo, Italy and now commutes about 1 mile on his bike to work at the restaurant everyday.
After the vineyard we took pictures in a few the secret walled gardens behind UVA’s quad, each different than the next. Something that next time I go back, I will have to revisit with intentions of soley meandering.
